Bird Watching in & around Kathmandu Valley

Discover the immense world of bird watching in Nepal, a country that slopes from the high Himalayas to the hot and humid plains in the terai. The topographical diversity has led Nepal to be a habitat for a wide range of bird species making the country a sought after destination for birding. Nepal has a recorded 848 species of birds (8 percent of the total birds in the world) and is also home to rare and endangered species like the Impeyan Pheasant, the national bird of the country and Spiny Babbler, the rare bird only found in Nepal.

Within the Kathmandu valley alone, a recorded 500 species of birds can be observed, primarily in destinations such as Nagarjun, Godavari, Phulchowki, Tau Daha and Bagmati and Manohara river. Kathmandu’s moderate climatic conditions with its forested hills surrounding open fields and wetlands makes this place a suitable habitat for diverse species of birds.

Birding in Kathmandu is in itself a wonderful experience, as hiking and adventure seekers are also suitably entertained. Trips for bird watching are also an outreach for great scenery including mountain views, wildlife exploration, interaction with local communities and observation of their culture and tradition.

Nepal is blessed with rich natural diversity, among which birdlife is amazing, huge and diverse that accounts for about 9% of the world’s bird population.

There are many birding sites located within a short distance from the city. Kathmandu valley rim and floor account some five hundred species of birds that are endangered, endemic, rare and globally threatened. Among many great sites, Godawari and Phulchauki or just Godawari forest is, one the most recommended for this nature and birdwatching tour.

Bird Watching Tour Godawari

For this enchanting tour, we take a short drive (45-50 minute) to Godawari bus park located to the south of Kathmandu and below the highest valley rim Phulchauki Hill (2760m) to start the tour.

This walk is undertaken through the community forest on the well-established road and trail, to the base of Phulchauki hill and around. We get ample chance to enjoy the nature and birds. This is one of the best birding destination close to Kathmandu city.

On a good day of birding around, one could easily record over 50 to hundred species. Among many species of beautiful birds, the record includes Green Magpie, Striated Laughinthrush, White-crested Laughing Thrushes, Golden-spectacled Warbler, Mountain Bulbul, White-colored Blackbird, Long-tailed Minivet, Rufous Niltava, Crested Serpent Eagle, Black Eagle, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Golden-throated Barbet, Grey-hooded Warblers, Mountain Bulbul, Black-eared Shrike-Babbler, Niltava with other species, which make our day very enthused.
